I was browsing some AYSO regional sites and came across this "Goal Differential Rule":
[We are] instituting firm penalties in an effort to keep score differentials in our games from getting out of hand:
[C]oaches in all divisions U-8 and above are forbidden to allow their teams to win by more than a 5 goal differential. If the opponent scores twice, for example, the maximum permitted score is 7-2.
If a coach allows his/her team to exceed the 5 goal differential, the team will be penalized. In divisions where standings are kept, the result will be recorded as a 0-1 forfeit loss for the offending team. In U-8, two or more such outcomes will cause a team to be excluded from the playoffs.
The referee will not give the game card to the winning coach in a blowout game. The referee will notify [the] Regional Referee Administrator.
I don't think that I can fully express how awful this is. I'm sure that it's motivated by the best of intentions, but it entirely misses the boat.
