> Sandcastle

In 1987 and 1988, sand sculptor Todd Vander Pluym and his associates created an enormous sand sculpture in the heart of the Santa Monica Place mall, in Santa Monica, California. Begun with "Sleeping Beauty's Castle" in the center it soon grew much larger and more complex.

My favorite parts were the sculptures based on Sir John Tenniel's illustrations from the Alice books, by Lewis Carrol. From the Mad Hatter's Tea Party to the Red Queen's croquet game, these illustrations come to life in three dimensions.

M and I often stopped by to watch the sculptors at work. Members of the public could even help a bit, and I think that I can take credit for one crennelation in there somewhere! One of the nice things about sand is that you can go back and correct errors by bungling amateurs.

On the following pages is a selection of a set of photographs that I took during one visit. Enjoy!
